From South Africa's transition to global thought leadership
25 years as ACCORD's full-service creative agency: brand, website, film and creative direction.
The need
Who they needed to reach
Governments, the African Union and the United Nations, peace practitioners, researchers, funders and civil society across Africa and around the world
What stood in the way
The African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) began in Durban in 1992, supporting South Africa's political transition, and grew into one of Africa's leading peace organisations. For years it kept a low profile, to protect its neutrality in mediation. As its role grew from quiet diplomacy to outspoken thought leadership on a global scale, it needed to communicate publicly and actively, and to make decades of research and experience easy to find.
What success looked like
An ACCORD that is visible, trusted and widely read, with its research, analysis and stories reaching the people who make decisions about peace.

How we met the need
For 25 years we have worked as ACCORD's full-service agency, with one team responsible for its brand, website, films and creative direction. We grew the website from a basic profile into a publishing portal, gave ACCORD's milestones and campaigns a consistent look, and told its story on film, from peace processes on the ground to the organisation's own history. When COVID-19 moved ACCORD's work online, we helped it make the change, including the launch of its Conflict & Resilience Monitor.
The process
ACCORD was founded in Durban in 1992 to support South Africa’s transition to democracy. Since then it has worked across the continent: mediating between leaders, training peacekeepers and police, supporting civil society, and working with the African Union and the United Nations. For much of that time it worked quietly, because mediators depend on being seen as neutral. As it stepped forward as a thought leader, it needed to be seen and heard.
For 25 years we have been ACCORD’s full-service agency: brand, website, film and creative direction from one team. The website began as a simple organisational profile and grew into a publishing portal for ACCORD’s journals, magazines, research and news. Every new piece of work, from an anniversary identity to a documentary, builds on the last, so ACCORD speaks with one consistent voice.
Film has been central to that voice. A History of Mediation in Africa marked 50 years of the OAU and African Union. In support of peace, from presidents to foot soldiers explained ACCORD’s work for its 20th anniversary, and 30 Years of ACCORD marked three decades. One Nation followed its support for peace in the Central African Republic, 25 Years of African Peace Operations recorded how Africa became the largest contributor to peace operations, and Global Peace introduced its newest initiative.
When COVID-19 stopped travel and meetings in 2020, ACCORD had to move its work online almost overnight. We helped it make that change, and launched the Conflict & Resilience Monitor on its website. The Monitor began as a regular briefing on how the pandemic was affecting peace and security in Africa, from political unrest to gender-based violence and cross-border tensions. It is still published today, as monthly analysis of conflict trends across the continent.
What the client got
25 years with one partner
The website has grown from a basic organisational profile into a vast portal that distributes news, publishes journals, magazines and analysis, and engages an international audience. When the pandemic stopped travel and meetings, ACCORD kept working and kept publishing online, and the Conflict & Resilience Monitor, launched in 2020, is still published today. Across 25 years, one agency has helped ACCORD move from a low profile to a recognised global voice on peace in Africa.
